Brake Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week focuses on speeding for 2020 campaign

Employers and fleet operators are being urged to support Road Safety Week next week with a commitment to tackling speeding to reduce incidents

Road Safety Week, the UK's biggest annual road safety event, takes place on November 16-22 with a focus on reducing speeding.

The event, coordinated by road safety charity Brake, aims to inspire thousands of businesses, schools, and communities to take action on road safety and promote life-saving messages during the week and beyond.

It also provides a focal point for professionals working in road safety to boost awareness and engagement in their work.

Every year the event focuses on a different element of road safety and for 2020 the theme is NO NEED TO SPEED.

Around the world, someone is killed on a road every 24 seconds, with 1.3 million dying every year; road incidents are the leading cause of death for young people aged five to 29.

Brake's vision is a world where everyone moves in a safe and healthy way. It works to stop road deaths and injuries, while also supporting people bereaved or seriously injured in road crashes.

The event, funded by the Department for Transport, has been running since 1997 to raise awareness about road safety and promote steps that everyone can take to stop needless deaths and injuries year-round.

Employers can get involved by raising awareness among employees, running events and explaining why this year’s focus is on speed.

In a crash, 1mph can mean the difference between life and death, but people still regularly break speed limits or travel too fast for the conditions of the road. Someone is injured on a UK road every four minutes, and vehicle speed plays a part in every crash.

Event organisers say the formula is simple: the higher the speed, the longer the stopping distance, the harder the crash and the greater the risk of death and injury.

No Need to Speed is a reminder to everyone of how the speed they travel affects other people.

Reflex Vehicle Hire has a long-term commitment to prioritising road safety, with vehicles fitted as standard with speed limiters and our award-winning Driive with Reflex modular safety platform.

Our technology delivers fleet insights that have helped fleet operators to slash incidences of speeding and reduce crashes.

In response, Brake has presented us with several awards for our long-term commitment to road safety. We are a finalist in several categories for this year’s UK Fleet Champions Awards, with the winners being revealed on Thursday, November 19.
