Fleets urged to complete at-work road risk survey

A new survey published by the Health and Safety Authority is asking fleets to provide their view on future updates to at-work road safety guidance

A new survey is asking fleet operators to give their views on the future shape of guidance related to managing risk when driving for work.

The study by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Department for Transport (DfT) is part of efforts to reduce the toll of injuries and deaths caused during work-based travel.

Official figures show driving for work is more dangerous than construction, farming, and mining. One third of road fatalities and more than one-fifth of all casualties occur in driving-for-work collisions.

In 2014, the HSE and DfT produced joint guidance, called INDG382: Driving at Work, to help businesses to understand their responsibilities relating to managing work-related road risk.

It explained that every employer has a responsibility to take all reasonable steps to manage on-road risks and do “everything reasonably practicable” to protect people from harm, in the same way as they would in the workplace.

The survey intends to update its guidance to reflect the greater use of technology and new best practice.

Fleet decision-makers and drivers from any industry are invited to take part in the survey.

A spokesman for the HSE said:

“There are no right or wrong answers; rather we are interested in your experiences and opinions regarding driving safely for work.”

You can make your voice heard by taking the survey here.

The survey closes at the end of January, 2021.
